Tonight, The Shadow will close down this blog for good. There will be no further entries to be made and you will see The Shadow at no further art openings or receptions. The Open Studios that we covered in March will be the final ones that we will cover.

And so, we say good-bye and good luck to all. We do wish all of you well in the future.

Visit ArtFest in the Park in Mountain View This Saturday

The Shadow recently received the following Press Release concerning ArtFest in the Park on Saturday, June 6, 2009:

The Alliance of Visual Artists (AVA) and the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) present AVArtFest 2009 as ARTFEST IN THE PARK on Saturday, June 6, 2009, 10 AM to 6 PM. The popular event, now in its thirteenth year, will be held for the first time in Pioneer Park, downtown Mountain View. Admission and parking are free.

ARTFEST IN THE PARK is where collectors discover affordable, original juried artworks for sale. The event showcases hundreds of works in all media including watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, drawing, calligraphy, mixed media, printmaking, photography, fiber art, silk painting, ceramics and sculpture.

“The festival offers established local artists, as well as new and emerging artists, an opportunity to share their creativity with the community,” said Festival Chair Catherine Rodriguez. “Because of the diverse array of work on display, there really is something to appeal to everyone.”

Attendees may also partake of the many excellent restaurants located in close walking distance to Pioneer Park on Castro and adjacent streets in downtown Mountain View.

Ten percent of the proceeds from each art sale will be donated by AVA to CSMA to support the school’s financial aid and arts education programs. “We are so very pleased to partner with the Alliance of Visual Artists in presenting this year’s ARTFEST IN THE PARK,” said CSMA Visual Arts Director Linda Covello. “We greatly appreciate the commitment of AVA and the many talented artists in supporting CSMA’s arts education programs for young people.”

The Alliance of Visual Artists (AVA), producers of this fine art show and sale, was founded to support local visual artists, provide a showcase for their work, and promote art education in the community. Alliance of Visual Artists (AVA) is a non-profit 501c3 all-volunteer organization.

The Community School of Music and Arts is a regional center for arts education committed to providing Arts for All regardless of age, level or economic means. Since its founding in 1968, CSMA has grown to be the largest non-profit provider of arts education programs in the region and is among the top 10 schools of its kind nationally. Annually, the school reaches 40,000+ people in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. At its Finn Center campus at 230 San Antonio Circle, Mountain View, programs in music, visual arts and new media are provided through lessons, classes and camps, as well as through concerts, artist talks and exhibitions. CSMA also provides arts-in-the-schools programs (Arts in Action, Music in Action), as well as special outreach events at community venues. The Shadow Returns To Hunter's Point

We realize that many people were looking for our report yesterday on our travels through Hunter's Point. However, we were having major computer problems last night and we could not get anything to happen. So our apologies if you came here earlier and did not find what you were looking for.

The Shadow returned to Hunter's Point last Sunday and visited the artists housed in Building 101.

Building 101 of Hunter's Point is the largest building at the shipyard. There are probably around 150 artists who maintain studios there. And it does take some time to get through -- it took The Shadow five and a half hours to get through both floors and see everyone who was open.

It's another week of Open Studios in San Francisco and this weekend The Shadow visited the Hunter's Point Shipyards.

The Shadow would be very remiss if he did not mention one of the studios that he visited during last weekend's Mission Open Studios tour.

The Shadow spent some time (actually a couple of days) in the studios of the artist group known as "The Local 303" at 1890 Bryant Street Studios. They are a fun group of guys and really know how to throw a party!

Attendance yesterday was very disappointing however -- probably the combination of a warm day in the City along with other activities going on. But for those who did make it -- we think you can agree that it was definitely worthwhile.

Something we would really be amiss not to mention was The Shadow's visit to Jasmine Rae Bakery in the 1890 Bryant Street Studios. You have heard The Shadow mention art in various medias, but here is a new one -- food. Jasmine's creations are a true work of art and very tasty as well (her mom made it a point to make sure that The Shadow got a free cupcake to sample). She is definitely worth a visit -- her website is here.

The Shadow has always believed that, of the three independent Spring Open Studios given in the City, the Mission District has always come out on top in our book. The work of artists in this section of town is always cutting edge and The Shadow has never been disappointed. In fact, one of the newest forms of art that The Shadow viewed this year was 3-D art that required 3-D glasses to view (and yes, for the first time since The Shadow has been doing this blog -- he had to remove his glasses to view the art with the 3-D glasses).

If you did not get out today, there is still time. Mission Open Studios will be taking place on Sunday from 11:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. The Shadow will be in the area until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow before leaving for another event, but we will see the remaining studios at that time.

Art Explosion Opens Spring Mission Open Studios

Yes, folks, you heard right. The 2009 Mission Spring Open Studios has finally arrived!

The Shadow visited the three locations of Art Explosion in the Mission District of San Francisco tonight for their preview party. It was a slow night, but it gave The Shadow a chance to reacquaint himself with many of the artists that he had not seen since Fall Open Studios in San Francisco.

The Shadow Attends A Soiree

The Shadow has been introduced to a new art marketing organization called Soiree International, Inc. This organization's mission is to bring together artists and art buyers. On February 15, 2009, Soiree International launched its website MySoiree.net to further this cause. But more on this in a moment.

Lyn Williams, CEO of Soiree International, recently hosted a party at Jamie Erfurdt's Gallery in Berkeley to bring together artists and art lovers (and buyers).

Considering how nice the day was in Berkrley last Sunday, attendance at this function was somewhat disappointing. The quality of the presentations by Lyn were excellent and the work and artists she selected for this inaugural party were top notch.

The Shadow Views A Piece of My Mind

After the Out of the Fog reception at City Hall, The Shadow ventured to the Reaves Gallery in Hayes Valley for an artist reception for artist Lucky Rapp and her work "a piece of my mind".

This was a fascinating exhibit. Lucky Rapp's work is an intricate puzzle which gives her thoughts over textbook pictures of the brain. The pictures on this blog do not do the work justice -- you would really have to see them live.

The Shadow last saw Brian McDonald during Week 2 of Open Studios in the Reaves Gallery. His new works are excellent and also must be seen in person to appreciate.

The Shadow Comes Out of the Fog

The Shadow Visits Treacherous Gardens

The Shadow was recently contacted by Kerri Stephens of Varnish Fine Art Gallery to come and view their current exhibit, "Treacherous Gardens" by artist Jennybird Alcantara.

The Shadow, having missed the opening reception, made time to view the exhibit this past week. The artist draws viewers into a mystical world inhabited by hybrid beings. The works are very colorful and pleasing to the eye.

"Treacherous Gardens" is on exhibit at Varnish Fine Art Gallery, 77 Natoma Street, in downtown San Francisco, through May 9, 2009.

As a reminder, because Varnish does have a permanent beer and wine bar on the premises, you must be over 21 to enter the gallery.

The Shadow Celebrates Persian New Year

The Shadow recently returned to the offices of San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi for an art exhibit and celebration for the Persian New Year.

Along with the fantastic art being shown, there was also plenty of food and music. This was no doubt the biggest gathering of Iranian-Americans in California all in happy celebration.

The Shadow Attends ArtSpan Art Auction

The Shadow recently had the opportunity ArtSpan's Benefit Art Show and Auction at SomArts Gallery in San Francisco.

Over 150 artists donated work to be auctioned off. Proceeds from the auction benefits many of ArtSpan's programs including its Art for City Youth Program, which puts artists together with about 700 disadvantaged youth in the San Francisco area.

New Opening at Aspect Art Gallery Friday

Earlier this week, The Shadow received the following announcement from the owner of Aspect Art Gallery:

Greetings Art Lovers,

We would cordially like to invite you to join our next art/artist reception here at ASPECT Art Gallery.

We are proud to present an exhibition showcasing both well established and emerging talents. ASPECT will be hosting an opening reception on Friday, February 27th, 2009 with many of the artists in attendance from 5:30pm to 9pm. The opening is free and open to Art Lovers / Collectors alike. Our aim is to present a number of promising young artists side by side with established talent that have both been underexposed in the Bay Area.

The Opening Show is also an event where Artists and Art Lovers can share techniques, point of view, talk Art and possibly even barter for artworks if not buy outright.

The Shadow will be attending this function and is proud to say that this will be the opening art reception for this blog in 2009.

The Final Academy Awards Tally.....

The Academy Awards have just ended and now the parties will no doubt begin.

There were really no surprises this year with probably the most suspenseful category this year being Best Actor. The telecast was also was not much to write home about -- although it was a nice touch when the Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress winners were presented by five previous winners in each respective category.

In about 45 minutes, the Red Carpet entrances to the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles will begin. And two hours after that, the 81st Academy Awards celebration will begin.

Open Studios Week 5, Day 2

The weather cooperated yesterday and it was a fitting end to Open Studios in San Francisco.

The Shadow returned to the Hunters Point Shipyard and visited with over 100 artists yesterday and helped Hunters Point close out Open Studios with a bang.

The Shadow spent over 5 hours yesterday viewing works of art in just about every medium there was. From simple oils to metal sculptures to mixed media, there was something for everyone's taste. And the artists could not have been nicer -- they were more than willing to discuss their work the entire day.

It was a dark and stormy day! (Apologies to Charles Schultz and Snoopy!)

But it was very wet and rainy yesterday and The Shadow braved the rains to travel to the Hunters Point Shipyard for the final week of Open Studios in San Francisco.

This was The Shadow's first trip to see the artists at Hunters Point and it was definitely worth the trip. There are over 200 artists at this venue spread out over 7 acres -- and the entire event is indoors so you can get relief from the weather!

Julian King Search Update

As The Shadow promised, we will continue to monitor the search for Actress Jennifer Hudson's nephew, Julian King.

We should clarify our earlier story on this. When we began to report on this story last Friday, The Shadow reported that Jennifer's mother and sister were found shot. We have since found out that it was Jennifer's mother and brother who was found shot Friday afternoon. Jennifer's sister, Julia, is still alive.

As we have also reported, Jennifer's 7 year old nephew, Julian King has been missing since Jennifer's mother and brother were found on Friday. An Amber Alert has been issued for Julian King.

Julian is described as being 4-feet-11 and 130 pounds. He was wearing a striped brown polo shirt and khaki pants when last seen. Chicago Police are also asking the public to look out for a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban with Illinois license plate X584859. If you have seen Julian or this vehicle, contact Chicago Police or 911 IMMEDIATELY.

We should note as well that the FBI is assisting Chicago Police in searching for Julian in the event that the kidnapper has left Illinois, which would then make the kidnapping a federal crime. In light of this, The Shadow is asking people in the immediate states neighboring Illinois, especially, and people in the United States to also be on the lookout for Julian and to call 911 or your local police department if you see him or the vehicle described above.

Jennifer Hudson tonight has announced that she is offering a reward of $100,000 for the safe return of her nephew.

The Shadow is urging the kidnapper to please return Julian to his family and to turn yourself in to police.

The Shadow will provide updates as event warrant.

Open Studios Week 4, Day 2

The Shadow got out into the sunshine today to see more artists during Week 4 of Open Studios. Unfortunately there were no signs to greet us, but there were plenty of grateful artists who welcomed our visit.

Open Studios 2008 has proven to be the perfect companion to the gorgeous weather that has blessed San Francisco during the past four weeks. Most of the artists that we spoke to today noted to us that they had seen more people today than the entire weekend. And with the art that is being shown in Week 4, we can definitely see why.

Open Studios Week 4, Day 1

The Shadow was able to get out yesterday into the warm sun of San Francisco to visit several artists during their Open Studios today. At one studio, we were even met by a very welcoming character!

Open Studios Week 4 Preview Parties

Update on Julian King Search

As this blog reported last night, the mother and sister of Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Hudson was found shot in their Southside Chicago home. Jennifer's 7 year old nephew, Julian King, is missing from the home and an Amber Alert has been put out for him.

Julian is 7 years old, is 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. He was wearing a brown polo shirt with stripes and khaki pants when last seen.

If you have seen Julian, please call Chicago Police or 911 IMMEDIATELY.

Help Find Jennifer Hudson's Nephew!

The Shadow has just learned within the past few minutes that the mother and brother of Academy Award winning actress and former American Idol Jennifer Hudson was found shot to death in Chicago.

Jennifer's mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson, were found slain in their home on the South Side of Chicago tonight according to CNN. Jennifer is on her way back to Chicago according to CNN.

What is more important right now is that there is an Amber Alert out for Jennifer's nephew, Julian King, who is missing from the scene of the slayings. Julian is 7 years old, is 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. He was wearing a brown polo shirt with stripes and khaki pants when last seen.

Open Studios Week 3, Part II

Well The Shadow was able to make up for the problems we encountered yesterday -- but we are still not satisfied but can do no more about it at this point.

Open Studios Week 3, Part I

Due to unforseen circumstances yesterday, The Shadow did not get around as much as he had hoped to yesterday, a fcat that will be remedied today. The Shadow spent the day in Noe Valley to visit with artists in the area.

Tonight, The Shadow was invited to Art Explosion's three locations as they held their Preview Party for Week 3 of Open Studios.

Well, it is the end of a successful week of Open Studios in San Francisco. The Shadow made it to the Haight, Laurel Heights and the Richmond today visiting over 30 artists!

Open Studios Week 2, Part I

It has finally begun. Open Studios is now underway in San Francisco. And with what The Shadow saw in his travels today, art is alive and well in San Francisco.

One of the people The Shadow was excited to meet today was Theresa Grannuci. Theresa is a 15-year-old high school student participating in her first Open Studio event with her father, John. She is a talented artist and highlights the future of art in San Francisco.

Open Studios Week 2 Begins!

The Shadow has been out tonight to bring you previews of what is to come during Open Studios!

At the invitation of artist Natasha Dikareva, The Shadow made a visit to Workspace Studios in the Mission District for their Preview party. The Mission District is part of Week 3 of Open Studios but Workspace wanted to bring the crowds in early.

San Francisco Open Studios -- Week 1

The 2008 Open Studios has begun in San Francisco!

Week one of Open Studios was dedicated to showing representative works from each of the artists who will open their studios in the next 4 weeks. The Shadow had the opportunity to speak with several artists today and we look forward to visiting their studios in the weeks ahead.

It's not too late to see this exhibit. This exhibit will be showing at SomArts through October 26, 2008. Hours are Wednesday-Friday, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

From The Open Studios Private Preview Gala

And what a party it was!

Last night, several patrons of the arts were the first to see representative selections of the artists participating in this years Open Studios in San Francisco.

Along with all of the mingling, good food and drink, VIP attendees were treated to music and dance performances as well.

There was also a live auction to raise money for ArtSpan's programs in the San Francisco School District. The Shadow was also the recipient of one of the prizes.

Final Countdown to San Francisco Open Studios 2008

We are now about 5 1/2 hours away from the formal opening of the 2008 Open Studios in San Francisco. ArtSpan staff members have been working around the clock to make this year as successful as previous years.

Tonight formally opens the event with ArtSpan's Private Preview Gala. The Gala is from 7:30 - 10:00 p.m. at SomArts Gallery, 934 Brannan Street. Online ticket sales have now ended but tickets are still available. General admission at the door is $60 (or you can purchase a VIP ticket for $115 at the door which also entitles you to enter the party at 6:00 p.m.).

Tomorrow will be the Opening Reception at SomArts (this is a free event) from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

The Shadow will be attending both events this weekend and will be moving into the city during Open Studios.

Also for those of you who will be coming to San Francisco from out of town or out of state, ArtSpan has informed The Shadow that Hotel Rex in the Union Square area of San Francisco will offer a 15% discount on hotel stays for Open Studios attendees. The Shadow Views Trans Mission

The American automobile. The symbol of status. A means of transportation. And tonight -- the focus of art.

Susan Tuttle, a good friend of The Shadow, invited him to the opening of a new art exhibit tonight entitled "trans mission". As you might guess -- automobiles are the focus of this exhibit.

This exhibit utilizes all forms of media -- painting, sculpture and photography. One might think that there is only so much you can say about an automobile in art -- but curators Peter MacLaird and Susan Tuttle have proven otherwise.

You can view this exhibit at GarageGallery, 655 Bryant Street, in the SOMA area of San Francisco. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The exhibit will show through October 20, 2008.

Two Artists -- Two Invitations

As The Shadow prepares for Open Studios in San Francisco in about 10 days, two artists have given The Shadow invitations to see their work -- so we are passing this information on to you.

Jamie Erfurdt has extended her Open Studio in Oakland to one more day -- Sunday, September 28, 2008 from noon to 6:00 p.m. Jamie is closing her space at Vulcan Studios, 4401 San Leandro Street, Suite #27, in Oakland and would love to see you there and to buy some of her work. The Shadow will be with Jamie during the Open Studio and will look forward to meeting you there.

Jamie also wanted us to let all of you know that she is also showing work at Lavish Hair Salon, 1734A Lombard Street (at Octavia Street) in San Francisco and at Spud's Pizza at Adeline and Alcatraz in Berkeley. The Lavish show is due to close sometime in October, the Spud's Pizza show is an open show.

Deborah Tash has just completed her newest work entitled "Spirit Of The Creek/Incanto". She will premere the work at the University of California, San Francisco's 20th Annual Faculty and Staff Art Show. Opening reception will be Monday, October 6, 2008, from 5-7 p.m. at UCSF's Millberry Union Conference Center, 500 Parnassus Avenue, in San Francisco. This show will only be up for a week (it closes October 10, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.), so don't miss it!

The Shadow has learned within the past 24 hours that his good friend artist Jaime Erfurdt is closing her studio in Oakland at the end of September.

Jaime is hosting an Open Studio for the next 2 weekends to do a final sale of some of her works before she moves. Jaime is at Vulcan Studios, 4401 San Leandro St. #27, in Oakland. She is letting pieces go very inexpensively and, if you ask her nicely, you can negotiate a nice price for some of her more expensive works!

The Shadow Views A Family Tree

On September 5, 2008, The Shadow visited Varnish Fine Arts Gallery to view their latest exhibit from artist Beth Bojarski entitled "Confessions from the Family Tree".

Beth is a Milwaukee-based artist with a great sense of humor. Her humor shows in her work, which is extremely rare for many artists to do successfully.

Beth describes her work as follows:

I love the fact that an artist is often given more freedom to question the world around them. . . . the great thing is even I may think I know what a painting is about, then I see it a year later and find something completely knew.

The centerpiece of this exhibit is the "family tree" -- a series of paintings created by Bojarski and rooted within a metal installation by sculptor Mark Winter. The paintings that make up the work are independent of each other, but by telling a story, they are also inter-dependent of each other as well.

This was a very well attended event and because of that, The Shadow did not get the opportunity to speak with Beth and get other insight on her work. But it also gives you the chance to review the exhibit on your own and see what insights you develop from seeing it.

Confessions from the Family Tree will be shown through October 4, 2008 at Varnish Fine Arts Gallery, 77 Natoma Street, in the SOMA area of San Francisco. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday by appointment. Because Varnish has a permanent wine/beer bar on the premises, no one under 21 will be admitted to the gallery.

Countdown to San Francisco Open Studios

It's almost here folks -- San Francisco's Fall Open Studios!

ArtSpan has now released new information on this fun time in San Francisco.

On October 4, 2008, ArtSpan will hold a Private Preview Gala at the SomArts Main Gallery. Along with previewing over 400 artists who will be participating during the four weeks of Open Studios, you can also enjoy complimentary cocktails, artfully prepared catering by Thomas John Events, a VaBang! This was a well-attended gallery opening for a Thursday night. The crowd really seemed to get into the artwork, the drinks were reasonably priced, and docents were available to discuss the work on display (and maybe get you to buy a piece or two).

The Shadow received an invitation recently to attend the opening reception of a new group show at the Gallery at 210 1/2 Clara Street. The participating artists were:

These three ladies come with their own medium and style which was very pleasant to see.

This gallery, unfortunately, escapes The Shadow's radar quite a bit (in fact, we found out about this show while attending another art reception). It was a great place to hang out, meet the artists, and listen to good music from a couple of talented DJs.

The Shadow Views The Work of Knox & Koh

Recently, The Shadow made a visit to Varnish Fine Art Gallery to view a new exhibit featuring the work of artists Michelle Knox and Eunkang Koh.

Both women bring a unique perspective to art and The Shadow enjoyed meeting both artists and discussing their work.

Michelle Knox uses glass sculptures to demonstrate who she is. "My work and my working process attempts to find tranquility. To reconnect myself with myself and to others." Her work is stunning.

Michelle continues: "I want to give an introspective moment to the viewer and create those moments for myself. I want to participate in the way my world looks and how people react to objects and to each other."

Eunkang Koh work is very colorful and detailed. Using specialized inks in her work Eunkang creates another world that she states "is not real but is an illusion that we perceive."

Koh continues: "We believe that humans are the top of the hierarchy in our econological system. We are trained to behave and pretend in a specific way to fit into mainstream society. What many of us do not realize is that humans are just a kind of animal, have animal instincts. We want to eat, excrete, protect ourselves, and at the same time attack others."

Both artists are very welcome additions to the Bay Area art scene. And, as can be seen below, many patrons at Varnish were enjoying their work.

New Exhibit at Varnish Fine Arts Gallery

The Shadow has recently been informed by Jennifer Rogers and Kerri Stephens of Varnish Fine Art Gallery of their new exhibit.

The exhibit will feature the art of Eunkang Koh and Michelle Knox.

Varnish will host an Artist Reception for the two artists this Thursday, July 10, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public, however The Shadow must stress that, because Varnish has a permanent beer/wine bar on the premises, no one under 21 will be admitted to the reception.

Varnish is located at 77 Natoma Street, between 1st and 2nd Streets in the SOMA area of San Francisco.

If you cannot make the reception, this exhibit is scheduled to be shown through August 9, 2008.

Get Ready for San Francisco 2008 Open Studios!

It is still early but planning for San Francisco's Open Studios is going on in earnest. Open Studios will take place the first weekend of October and go through the first weekend of November 2008.

ArtsSpan has sent two announcements to The Shadow in the previous days that we would like to share with you.

The Exhibition Opening Reception has been scheduled for October 5, 2008 at the SomArts Gallery. We will have more information on this reception as we get closer to the date.

Second, and more important for those of you who will be coming to San Francisco from out of town or out of state, ArtSpan has informed The Shadow that Hotel Rex in the Union Square area of San Francisco will offer a 15% discount on hotel stays for Open Studios attendees. The Closing of ARTWorkSF in San Francisco

The Shadow has received several inquiries -- some from as far away as the East Coast -- inquiring why ARTWorkSF shows were missing from this blog in the past month.

There are two reasons for this. The first is that The Shadow had to take some time off to deal with personal matters and did not attend any art openings during the month of May.

The second is a bit more tragic. The ARTWorkSF Gallery at 49 Geary Street closed it doors on June 1, 2008. Johnny Davis, founder and president of ARTWorkSF, has decided to retire to concentrate on personal matters.

The Shadow was indeed sorry to hear this. ARTWorkSF has been a friend of this blog since its inception in July 2005 and The Shadow has covered many events for ARTWorkSF during that period. The Shadow has not spoken personally with Johnny Davis, but we wish him well in his retirement.

In the meantime, Matt MaKinley, former Chief Curator at ARTWorkSF will continue to work at many of the ARTWorkSF venues through his venture McKinley Art Solutions. Matt is a good guy and knows the San Francisco Bay Area art scene well. He is also a fantastic curator. We have no doubt that we will continue to see the high quality of artwork that ARTWorkSF was proud to show in their gallery.

In the meantime, The Shadow will continue its gallery collaboration with Varnish Fine Art Gallery in the SOMA district of San Francisco and its organizational collaboration with ArtSpan in San Francisco.

It is our pledge to bring you the best in artwork in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond and the collaborations with McKinley Art Solutions, Varnish Fine Art Gallery and ArtSpan will allow us to do that.

The Shadow Takes A Fresh Look at Ice Cream Art

The Shadow briefly left the Deborah Tash studio opening to visit another artist and friend -- Kellyann Gilson Lyman -- who has a new solo show entitled "Ice Cream Art -- A Fresh Look".

Kellyann brought out a lot of new work from a new series entitled "Ice Cream Art". In this series, Kellyann continues to explore abstract coloring with several pieces very pleasing to the eye.

The exhibit was curated by Kellyann, who did a wonderful job in putting the exhibit together. Matt McKinley of McKinley Art Solutions, another good friend of The Shadow, was on hand to give his perspective on Kellyann's work. (The Shadow will have more on Matt in another entry.)

Providing music at this venue was a wonderful blues/latin/jazz band called Girls Talk Band. This trio of women were wonderful to listen to and provided quite an ambiance to the afternoon.

You can view Kellyann's work at The Sports Basement, Gallery Del Grotto, 1590 Bryant Street, in San Francisco. The Gallery is located in the basement of the store. You can view the exhibit during normal business hours.

The Shadow Visits with Deborah Tash

Last weekend, artist Deborah Tash invited The Shadow to the opening of her new studio in the Potrero Hill area of San Francisco.

As you may recall earlier in this blog, Deborah was forced to abandon her old studio last May. With the help of many good friends -- who were also present at the opening -- and Deborah's vision for a new space, she now has a studio space that most artists would envy!

Everyone in attendance would pretty much agree that Deborah's new studio has a warmth and energy that would allow her to continue creating the wonderful art that she is known for.

A Comedy Legend Is Gone

As you may have heard by now, a legendary comedy icon has died. George Carlin, without a doubt the most edgy and controversial comic to live, died Sunday of heart failure at the age of 71.

Say what you want about Carlin's humor -- this man was brilliant when it came to edgy comedy. His best known routine, "The Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" was so controversial, that it prompted a lawsuit after a New York radio station aired it in 1973. Carlin was also arrested several times for performing the monologue live.

The lawsuit was eventually heard by the U.S. Supreme Court which ruled 5-4 that the monologue was "indecent but not obscene." It was soon after the Court made its opinion that the Federal Communications Commission determined that such language should only be heard in late night -- a policy that still stands today.

Carlin paved the way for many comics today. Tributes are pouring in from comics throughout the world. As The Shadow mentioned -- say what you want about his comedy -- George Carlin was the master.

For those of you who may have never heard it, below is the "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" monologue. The Shadow will warn you that the material in this video is very explicit and is not suitable for minors. Use your judgment.

In recent weeks there has been a lot of activity connected with the semi-nude photo of Miley Cyrus from Vanity Fair. That photo is distracting too much from the purpose of why this blog was formed -- to examine art, culture and entertainment. The Shadow has removed the picture because of this.

The Shadow Travels to the East Bay for Open Studios

The Shadow, at the invitation of his good friend, artist Jaime Erfurdt, traveled to Oakland to view her open studios at Vulcan Studios.

Jaime's work encompasses digital photography, sketches, and paintings using paint with a very unique ingredient (we will let her tell you what it is).

The Shadow would like to thank Jaime for inviting us to her studio (and the great time we had with friends afterwards) and to Liz and Donna for sharing their work with us.

However, we learned during the course of the afternoon that the Open Studio at Vulcan Studios was part of a region-wide Open Studios event organized by Pro Arts Gallery in Oakland. The Shadow will comment more on Pro Arts in a moment.

On Sunday, The Shadow went to Berkeley with two new companions, Anne and Arthur, to try to take in some of the work in the East Bay Open Studios.

It is not The Shadow's place to tell an art organization how they should do their business. But collaboratives like this come together to help artists sell their works. There was scant advertising for this event done in the East Bay and no advertising -- that The Shadow is aware of -- in San Francisco or the Peninsula. The Shadow would recommend expanding your focus in the future to include people west of San Francisco Bay. To put it simply -- The Shadow would love to cover this event and see more artists, but if we do not know about the event, we cannot do that.

New Exhibit At Sports Basement In June

The Shadow has recently heard from his good friend, artist Kellyann Gilson-Lyman. She has a new show coming up soon that looks very exciting. You can read more about it below.

In other words, clear June 22, 2008 on your calendar.

The Shadow will be meeting with Kellyann very soon -- probably within the next couple of weeks. But she promises this show to be "fun and different" and knowing Kellyann the way The Shadow does, it will be.

Leave Miley Cyrus Alone Please!!

By now, it is pretty common knowledge about the pictures that Miley Cyrus took for Vanity Fair magazine. If you have not seen the pictures, they are below.

For those of you who don't know who Miley Cyrus is -- she is the alter-ego of the character Hannah Montana, one of the highest rated shows on the Disney Channel. She is also the 15-year-old daughter of singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

The photos, taken by respected photographer Annie Leibovitz, has caused a stir since they were made public. Many parents, understandably, have taken the teen to task on her photos. Many are very upset with the semi-nude photo of her that was taken. Many people also made the assumption that Miley's parents were not present at the photoshoot (they were). Many are also saying that Miley has lost her role model status because of the pics.

The Shadow has this to say to all: GET A LIFE PEOPLE!!!!

Miley has appropriately apologized to her fans for the raciness of the photos. Annie Leibovitz released the following statement on the photos:

Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful.

The Shadow agrees. Miley knew what she was doing and the photos are very tastefully done. And she will be America's darling again within a week or so.

The Shadow would say to the parents who have hounded Miley since these pics came out: While The Shadow can understand your feelings in terms of how your young daughters may perceive these photos -- if you don't want your children to see them -- DON'T LET THEM SEE THE MAGAZINE. The Shadow also doubts that many girls in the 6-14 age range are reading Vanity Fair.

Let this one go people.

Mission Open Studios is probably the best known of the Spring Open Studios event in San Francisco. Over 350 artists get together and usually plan the ultimate weekend for showing their work. There may even be a few extras here and there.

New to the mix this year is a new space -- ActivSpace, located at 3150 18th Street. This space is still growing but should be ready by Open Studios in October. But there are artists there now who are definitely worth a visit.

This was The Shadow's first visit to Varnish and he has to say, this is quite a space! It is very conducive to showing art and hosting great parties (they have a great wine bar there).

The Shadow spoke briefly with Varnish's director, Jennifer Rogers, who informed him that this could well be the last anniversary party at Varnish. The building that houses the gallery is slated to be demolished to make way for the new Transbay Terminal in downtown San Francisco. The Shadow will keep you posted on this.

This exhibit will be shown through May 31, 2008. Varnish is open Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. (ish) and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. The wine bar opens at 5:00 p.m. Varnish hosts many private events Tuesday-Thursday nights so it is a good idea to call them to see if it is a good idea to go on any of those nights (they will not plan private events on Fridays). The Shadow also needs to tell you that, because Varnish has a permanent wine bar on the premises, no one under 21 (including children and babies) can be admitted to the gallery.

The Shadow Views Transformations

At the invitation of artist Charlotte Kay, The Shadow ventured to the San Francisco First Unitarian Church's Kings Gallery to view at photography exhibit entitled "Transformation" by the photo critique group Illuminata.

These four women came together to offer advice and support to each other and their photography pursuits. And judging by what The Shadow saw in this exhibit, these women take their work seriously.

The Shadow Visits with Cheryl McDonald

The Shadow's good friend Cheryl McDonald contacted us the other day to let us know of a solo show she is doing in a restaurant in the Castro District of San Francisco. The Shadow, on a beautiful Sunday morning, went to Squat and Gobble to join Cheryl and friends for brunch and to view the show.

The Shadow has featured Cheryl's work on this blog before. Cheryl has a very good eye and can make pencil drawings look like full photographs.

The Shadow Meets Carol Van Zandt at 2223

On April 9, 2008, The Shadow made a visit to a popular restaurant in the Castro District, 2223 Restaurant to view her solo show "Omote/Ura -- Outside/Inside".

Carol's works are great and complements the atmosphere at 2223 Restaurant.

The Shadow Visits Mama Art Cafe

The Shadow was invited by his good friend Heike Seefeldt recently to view some new works of hers at Mama Art Cafe.

Heike, as The Shadow has reported here in the past, uses mixed media collages to tell her story. She uses several themes -- both religious and non-religious.

Heike is an up and coming artists here in the San Francisco Artist Community and her work is definitely worth considering. The Shadow expects to see great things from her in the future.

The Shadow Visits Bazaar Cafe

At the invitation of an old friend, artist Heike Seefeldt, The Shadow traveled to Bazaar Cafe in the Richmond District of San Francisco to spend time with her and artist Sue Vaughan during their art show there.

The Shadow first met Heike and Sue during one of San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi's Third Friday openings (for those of you who have asked The Shadow about this as of late, The Shadow will return to City Hall soon). You can view The Shadow's coverage of that opening here.

This was a very informal reception (both artists brought a friend with The Shadow joining them) but it was very relaxed. Considering that the reception was held on St. Patrick's Day, it was a welcome change of pace from the frantic partying elsewhere in the city.

You can view the exhibit at Bazaar Cafe, 5927 California Street (between 21st and 22nd Avenues), in San Francisco. While you are there enjoying the artwork, enjoy a cup of coffee, some food, or a beer or wine there as well. Bazaar Cafe's website is here.

This exhibit is comprised of digital prints, many of which are very expertly done. In speaking with many of the artists at the reception, there is quite a passion for this work. It shows in this exhibit. Unfortunately, these pictures do not give the work justice.

You can view this exhibit at Au Coquelet Cafe Restaurant, 2000 University Avenue (at Milvia), in downtown Berkeley during regular business hours (they are open until 2:00 a.m. most days). The exhibit runs through March 30, 2008.
