See Kellyann Gilson Lyman During December!!

The Shadow has just heard from his good friend, artist Kellyann Gilson Lyman today. She wanted to inform The Shadow of two upcoming show that she has and The Shadow is pleased to pass this information along.

Kellyann will be showing at the following:

* She will do a solo exhibition entitled "Winter Grotto Art Party" at the Sports Basement, 1590 Bryant Street, in San Francisco. Opening reception for this show will be December 7th, from 6 - 8 p.m. Exhibit is schedule to run through January 7, 2008.

* Kellyann will be part of a group show entitled "The Great Outdoors" at A Different Day Gallery, 1233 Solano Avenue, Albany. Opening reception for this show will be December 8th, from 3 - 6 p.m. Exhibit is scheduled to run through March 28, 2008.

* Finally, Kellyann will be part of another group show entitled "Holiday Art Group Show" at SomArts Gallery, located on the corner of Brannan and 8th Streets in the South of Market Area of San Francisco. Opening reception for this show will be December 18th, from 6 - 8 p.m. This exhibit will run through December 22nd.

The Shadow would invite you to come out and support both Kellyann and all Bay Area artists during December.

Works in this show did not use the usual media that The Shadow usually brings to you. This show gives new meaning to the words "mixed media".

In the words of Matt McKinkey, Chief Curator, this exhibit is :

An all media exhibit focused on artists exploring new techniques material usage. Rather than declaring "Painting is Dead!", the impetus of the innovative artist is to continue to expand the capabilities of what their chosen materials can do by incorporating new techniques in applications, consistency, combination with other materials or, for the technologically inclined, exploring the capabilities of computer programs and applications. This exhibit is for today's vanguards of artist innovation!

This exhibit will be showing at Polarity Post Productions, 69 Green Street, in San Francisco. Viewing hours are Monday-Friday from 9 to 5. This exhibit will be showing through January 12, 2008. As always, all works at the exhibit are available for sale or three-month rental.

The Shadow Meets Wendy Robushi

The Shadow received a last-minute invitation this past week to attend a wine tasting and reception for artist Wendy Robushi this past Friday. The Shadow, being the culturally-minded person that he is, decided to spend some of his Friday night at the ARTWorkSF Gallery for Wendy's current exhibit "8 to 108: Symbols Sacred & Asupicious".

Many of you will recall The Shadow's blog entry last week for ARTWorkSF's First Thursday opening. Wendy's solo show was part of that opening, but the artist was unable to attend. So it was a treat for The Shadow to make her acquaintance in this setting.

Wendy's solo show fits in well with the Gallery's group show "East Meets West". The mystical nature of Wendy's work hides several messages that these pictures will not show well (but you can always go to the gallery to view them).

This exhibit will be showing through December 3, 2007 at ARTWorkSF Gallery, 49 Geary, Suite 249 in San Francisco. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Don't Forget Open Studios Today

Today is the final day of Open Studios in San Francisco for 2007. Unfortunately The Shadow has other commitments today and cannot attend, but he would encourage all of you who are reading this blog to go out today.

Adventures in Clay Workshop Announcement

Part of the mission of this blog is to bring art and culture to the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Well we not only bring you pictures of the receptions that we attend, but also other goings on in the art world.

Artist Natasha Dikareva, whom The Shadow has featured on many of these pages, has just written to inform us of a workshop she is holding on November 10th and 17th in San Francisco.

Adventures in Clay

Ceramic Sculpture Workshop with Natasha Dikareva

Sat November 10 and Sat November 17 (11am – 5pm)
New and returning all levels students are welcome!
Sculpt with clay in the studio 9 workshop!

Workspace Limited, 2150 Folsom Street @18th in San Francisco's Mission District.

This workshop is suited for people either new to ceramic sculpture or looking to improve their ceramic skills. The course is centered on fundamental principles of clay sculpting. Whenever you feel comfortable is where we begin. All subject matter – whether "traditional" or "your own" - is acceptable.

Bring an idea to start with or we'll create one that suits you. Teapots, masks, busts, reliefs, animals, abstractions, buildings and everything in between. All sculptures will be glazed and fired as needed. The workshop will cover:

• hand-building techniques

  pinch slab
  press molding
  coil modeling

• texture
• under-glazes
• engobes
• glazes
  
  

The cost of the course is $200 which includes 12.5 lb of clay, selection of cone 04 glazes, clay tools, and plaster molds. Please bring working clothes, some hand lotion, and a snack for the tea break.

Deposit to hold a space $100 due by November 1.

The Shadow Does East Meets West

The Shadow made his monthly visit to the ARTWorkSF Gallery in Union Square for their monthly First Thursday exhibit. Within the gallery were two shows: a solo show and a group show.

The solo show, in Gallery One, is from artist Wendy Robushi and is entitled "8 to 108: Symbols Sacred & Auspicious".

Curators for this show was Jennifer Morris (who The Shadow was excited to see again) and Matt McKinley.

In the coffee table book that accompanies this exhibit (more on this in a moment), Jennifer recounted how Western art is influence by Eastern culture. The Shadow would note that she really hit the nail on the head with this exhibit -- you can definitely see it in each of the forms of media in this exhibit.

Also featured at this exhibit was a video by artist Tim Roseborough entitled "Neon Garden". It is a video of quickly moving images very pleasing to the eye -- the photos below really do not do justice to the video -- you would have to see it in person.

The Shadow Gets Clothes Minded on Halloween

It is Halloween night in San Francisco and the biggest news in the city at the time was whether or not there would be trouble in the Castro District of the city by a Halloween party that was not supposed to take place. But in any event, before those festivities, ARTWorkSF held a special reception at the Hotel Triton in downtown San Francisco to unveil their new exhibit, "Clothes Minded".

This was a fitting exhibit for this time of year. To accent Chief Curator Matt McKinley's description of this exhibit:

The way one chooses to dress is a conscious choice that summarizes the perception of self that is exposed publicly in order to influence other's perceptions..."

The Shadow Meets A Fashion Designer

Well folks it is First Thursday and The Shadow usually goes to ARTWorkSF's Gallery to check out the current show. The Shadow has done that and will report on that show this weekend But The Shadow has another agenda tonight.

The Shadow met up with Gisela Tangui, the lead singer from Voodoo Caberet. We decided to visit a couple of art galleries after we left ARTWorkSF (sorry no pictures of these galleries). Afterwards, we went to Otis, which was the setting for another ARTWorkSF exhibit earlier in October.

When we entered Otis, we found an Open Trunk Show in progress. One of the designers there was Jada Simons from MarieMarie. Gisela tried on a dress that looked absolutely gorgeous on her.

Gisela has promised to wear the dress at Voodoo Caberet's next concert on November 30th. The Shadow will give information on that show later this month.
